UFC 279 fell last night (Saturday, September 10, 2022) from inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, which saw Nate Diaz introduce Tony Ferguson in the main event of the evening in what could have been the Stockton slugger’s last fight inside the Octagon…at least for a while (see it). In the co-main event, Chimaev’s Punks managed to defeat Kevin Holland by introducing the first round (Highlights).
Winner: Nate Diaz
Who should face it next: ….
After defeating Ferguson, Diaz announced that he will be taking a break from MMA since he went through his contract with the UFC. He will now turn his attention to Upgrade his combatwhich he hopes to build in the coming years. He’s said he’ll get back to the octagon down the road, but there’s no point in assuming he’ll face because it could be years before Stockton’s racket comes back…that’s if it happens.
Winner: Khamza Shemayev
Who should face it next: Colby Covington
After Chimaev claimed his sixth straight win inside the Octagon by eliminating Kevin Holland, he will now have to win at least one more fight before he takes the title. That’s because Bowers lost weight, badly, due to their scheduled match against Diaz, prompting the promotion to move a lot of pieces in order to save the event. Had he fought and defeated Diaz, that would be the next title shot. Instead, the fight against Covington appears to be in order. Covington is the No. 2 seed in the division and took a dominant win over Jorge Masvidal. With Shemayev ranked third, the fight makes sense. With the win, Chimaev can get the next shot (Assuming he’s gaining weight). For Colby, his chance to take out the Smesh Express was on his way to another title fight.
winner: Irene Aldana
Who you should face next: Giuliana Pena
Aldana took her second straight win after scoring one of the most unique knockouts in recent memory, crippling Missy Chiason with a liver knockout, rendering her unable to continue. Currently ranked No. 4 in the women’s bantamweight division, Aldana defeated the second seed, Ketlen Vieira. Holly Holm sits third and is the one who defeated Aldana but came out losing to Vieira. Pina wants a third fight against Amanda Nunes, but I don’t see her getting it. After all, she lost the title on her first defense and was completely hit by the “Lioness” in the rematch, so there’s no justification for a third fight. I think fighting against Aldana makes more sense.
winner: Daniel Rodriguez
Who he should face next: Kevin Holland
Call me crazy, but I still want to see this fight. The two are set to dispose in this event before all changes occur. And the fact that I don’t think Rodriguez did enough to beat Li Jingliang only adds to my preference to see them match again (for the third time). Holland didn’t look good against Shemayev, but in his defense, there was no one other than Gilbert Burns.
winner: Johnnie Walker
Who should face it next: Paul Craig
Walker cut his losing streak in two fights by scoring an impressive first-round victory over Ion Cutelaba. Then for the towering Brazilian, a fight against Craig may be on the horizon. Craig emerges from a heavy loss at the hands of Volkan Ozdemir, losing to No Time last summer in London, England. While I usually don’t like pairing losing fighters against winning fighters, this makes sense because Craig is 9th while Walker sits 13th. A win over Craig brings Walker closer to the top 10 and increases his momentum. Move forward.
