Blue Jays hire Zack Collins for appointment

I have selected Blue Jays Mask Zach Collins for appointment, Tweets Mitch Bannon from Sports Illustrated. This move creates a vacancy in the 40-man list as a comfortable Julian Meriwether, which was activated from the injured list for 60 days between double-day matches with the Orioles. Valid Casey Lawrence Selected for Triple-A Buffalo to clear an active spot on the list.

Toronto acquired Collins just before the opening, and swapped with the White Sox in a deal sent Reese McGuire to Chicago. One of Jays’ big pleas at the time was that Collins could be selected to Triple-A, while the unavailable McGuire had to remain on the active MLB roster. In the Jays organization which also has files Danny JanssenAnd the Alejandro Kirk And the highest potential customer Gabriel Moreno, Collins had a tough time getting a major league diamond. He’s appeared in 26 MLB games this season, scoring just .194/.266/.417 with an unsustainable strike rate of 39.2% over 79 trips to the plate.

Switch support had more success – albeit in a not entirely unorthodox way – in Buffalo. It has a .195/ .361/ .398 streak through 155 board backs with Bison. The batting average is clearly not impressive, but the massive 20.6% walking rate allowed Collins to gain a base with a strong clip in the minors. He’s also connected to five homeowners, seven doubles and threes in 36 Triple-A.

Discipline and strength have always been Collins’ calling cards, and that combination was enough to inspire the White Sox to take him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2016 draft. He has an excellent walk rate of 13% over 430 appearances for the MLB board, but that wasn’t enough to make up for his 33.5% Of the hits that resulted in a hit rate of less than 200.

Collins will now find himself on concessions. With the deadline to trade in the rearview mirror, Jays either has to release him or try to run him through outright concessions. He’s in his final year in the minor league selection, so the acquiring club could hide him in Triple-A for the rest of this season but will have to carry him to the opening roster in 2023 or make him available to other teams.

Meanwhile, Merryweather is in a position to make his MLB debut in just under three months. He has been out since June 14 due to an abdominal strain, an unfortunate continuation of the injury issues that have bothered him throughout his career. Merryweather has also wasted time with elbow and tilt issues as a top player, as well as several IL missions as a possibility. As a result, the 30-year-old made 41 appearances in MLB, but showed a solid arsenal when he was healthy.

The right hand has averaged 97.3 mph on a fast ball this season. This didn’t translate into as many puffs one might expect, with his swing hit rate of 10.7% over 18 1/3 innings just below the league average. Merryweather stimulated the balls at the 52.5% high clip, however, and would offer interim manager John Schneider a strong arm to draw on for relief.
